If You Want to Be a Tutor…

…You’ll need to have the proper teaching credentials.
Some people think of tutoring as a job that anyone can get into. Stay-at-home mom all your life? Sure! College student? Absolutely!
Except that’s not really how it works. Many would-be tutors find when they apply at a Washington DC tutoring service that they don’t have the proper qualifications. Most tutoring services require at least one of two things (if not both):
- A teaching degree and licensure
- Demonstrated expertise in the subject area you wish to tutor
This means, for one, that in order to tutor you also have to be eligible to be a teacher. It also means that Washington DC reading tutors have to have education on or experience in teaching reading, math tutors have to have math expertise, and so on.
So why would you want to be a Washington DC in-home tutor if you’re also qualified to be a teacher? Here are a few reasons:
- It’s the middle of the year and you can’t get a job as a teacher yet.
- You are working as a substitute teacher and need some extra money to pay the bills.
- You need a more flexible schedule than teaching would give you.
Tutoring can be a rewarding career, and if that’s what you want to do I highly recommend it. Just know that not just anyone can walk in off the street and become a tutor — which is actually a good thing, if you think about it!
